Dr. Jeremiah J. Johnston was once a skeptic of the famed Shroud of Turin, the burial cloth believed by many to bear a fascinating image created during Christ\u2019s resurrection.<\/p>\n
Johnston, author of \u201cPeace of God Bible: Discover and Experience God\u2019s Shalom Throughout the Bible,\u201d told CBN News he is fully confident about the New Testament\u2019s authenticity.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe authenticity of the New Testament is without question,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Bible is a historical book and \u2026 these are books about real people, real places, real events. Our scriptures are not fairy tales. They\u2019re not legends. They\u2019re not lore. And they are so well-evidenced.\u201d<\/p>\n
Among the elements that convince Johnston of the Bible\u2019s real and authentic take are the findings coming from archaeologists who routinely explore information and relics dating back centuries.<\/p>\n
\u201cArchaeologists use six books to make sure that they\u2019re digging in the right spot in Israel,\u201d he said. \u201cThey always use these six books \u2014 Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, the Book of Acts, and then they use Josephus.\u201d<\/p>\n
Johnston continued, \u201cSo if the archeologists who dig, and many of them are not Christians, use the New Testament because \u2026 it\u2019s very similar with what we expect the First Century world to be like, you better believe I\u2019m going to use the Bible too.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Bible expert said there are dozens of evidence-based facts that point to the life, death, miracles, and resurrection of Jesus based on archaeological sources.<\/p>\n
\u201cChristianity \u2026 is the only religion that you can test against history, and it passes the test at every turn,\u201d Johnston said. \u201cAnd this is where things like the physical bodily resurrection of Jesus [are] so well evidenced, and what\u2019s amazing is, I believe, as we get closer to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, we are seeing a controlled revelation of discoveries tied to technology.\u201d<\/p>\n
Johnston specifically addressed the Shroud of Turin, which gives him peace about the reliability of Scripture.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s the only artifact that we have outside of the Bible that gives evidence to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus all in one artifact,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I\u2019ve met many of the 102 scientists, and then the 102 scientific disciplines that have put their academic and reputation on the line to \u2026 prove \u2014 and that it\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve used that word \u2014 to prove that the shroud is not a hoax. It\u2019s not man-made. There\u2019s no pigment. There\u2019s no dye. There\u2019s no coloring.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Bible expert went on to say that there\u2019s no way to explain the image on the Shroud \u2014 something he said is the real \u201ckicker.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy it\u2019s there is because God demonstrated His love for you and me and that, when we were at our worst, God sent His best for us,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the signature of the Shroud.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ultimately, Johnston said the Shroud has brought much peace to his life \u2014 a remarkable reality considering he was once a critic of the relic.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wrote a bestselling book called \u2018Body of Proof\u2019 on the resurrection, and I never mentioned the Shroud because I was a total skeptic on the Shroud,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the funny part. I mean, I have a PhD from England \u2026 like, it was hammered into me that the shroud was a \u2026 forgery.\u201d<\/p>\n
Johnston said he was operating on sound bites and \u201cnot substance\u201d when he discounted the Shroud, but that this changed once he began digging deeper and speaking with experts. Eventually, his entire perspective changed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s \u2026 the greatest evangelism discipleship tool I\u2019ve ever seen in my ministry,\u201d Johnston said.<\/p>\n
His transition on the topic has been fascinating, considering how diligently he previously questioned it. But he now has absolutely no doubts, noting the pollen spores on the Shroud come from Jerusalem.<\/p>\n
\u201cI now believe the shroud is authentic,\u201d Johnston said. \u201cWhen you look at the blood and you see that it\u2019s type AB blood, it\u2019s human blood, it\u2019s Semitic blood \u2026 and then the pollen spores.\u201d<\/p>\n
