Holy and merciful God, our Lord and our judge, how dare we approach Your altar, knowing that in these days of discord and disruption\u2013and despite all our efforts to see our own way through this shutdown\u2013what we have not done is reconcile ourselves one to another.<\/p>\n

Long before any legislative disputes can be resolved, call us to account for our own attitudes and actions toward one another. When we come before You, sure and certain of our own righteousness, our steps expose our inmost and private disdain for the unity to which You have called us.\n<\/p>\n

Though the chasm of our disputes seems deep and wide, help us to find meeting places where hearts and minds can convene and common ground can be cultivated.\n<\/p>\n

Give us the courage to reach out, though we fear rejection; to initiate dialogue, though the response may be disdain; to get to the heart of an issue, though the feelings guarding it are deep and divisive.\n<\/p>\n

If there is any way any or all can give a measure of kindness, diplomacy, and civility, reward that offering in good and equal measure in return, that Your blessing will relieve the burden those we serve are having to bear in these days.\n<\/p>\n

Then let us approach Your throne for Your grace and Your guidance in our work.\n<\/p>\n

Eternal God, the fountain of unity, in 1858, 3 years before the start of the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln quoted the words of Jesus of Nazareth. Lincoln repeated a warning of Jesus found in Matthew 12:25, which states:\n<\/p>\n

A house divided against itself cannot stand.\n<\/p>\n

May we learn lessons from this warning that will enable this great Republic to endure.\n<\/p>\n

Lord, today, inspire our lawmakers to become united for the good of the United States.\n<\/p>\n

Lord, we continue to pray without ceasing for an end to this shutdown. Use our Senators to make this dream become a reality. Help them to express their gratitude to You with deeds of faith, love, and obedience. May our lawmakers, for the glory of Your Name, learn to foresee danger and take precautions. Prosper the works of their hands until the kingdoms of this world become the springboard for the eternal reign of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.\n<\/p>\n

Today, guide our lawmakers so that they will live for Your honor, ensuring that our citizens will have a government of, by, and for the people. Lord, use our legislators to help end this government shutdown. Increase their faith, hope, and love, enabling them to transform cacophony into concord, doubt into faith, and falsehood into truth. May our Senators seek to become a voice for those who are suffering during these challenging times, until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.\n<\/p>\n

Creator God, repair and renew this world, the work of Your wisdom, designed to reveal Your own divine will, for we are broken and divided, in need and at odds, angry and hungry, unnerved and unmoored from the foundation of unity You have intended for us.\n<\/p>\n

Whatever our pretenses for separation, whether dissatisfaction with our situation or disagreement with the other side, we deserve Your rebuke, for You compel us as believers to respect the body You have put together, admonishing us to have mutual and equal concern for one another.\n<\/p>\n

In these days, when parts of the body are suffering, reveal to us how all of us suffer with them. When we cease to put love over legislation, our integrity weakens.\n<\/p>\n

When we honor one another, working to ensure each may enjoy sure and certain security of one\u2019s basic needs and demonstrating our shared commitment to the common good, we then reveal Your grace plan and glorify You with our mutual love.\n<\/p>\n

Grant us then the humility to serve this body as we seek to serve this country and You in this time.\n<\/p>\n

Eternal God, our King, when our children and grandchildren want to know what we were doing in the 119th Congress during the famous shutdown, may we not have to give these answers: I helped set a new record for keeping the government closed. I failed to appeal to the better angels of my nature. I forgot Matthew 7:12, which states:\n<\/p>\n

Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you.\n<\/p>\n

This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. Lord, remind our lawmakers that no gold medals are given for breaking shutdown records, but a crown of righteousness is given to those who take care of the lost, last, and least.\n<\/p>\n

Divine Provider, You have given us everything we need for life and godliness. With these things and Your great promises, You equip us to escape the corruption of this world and to participate in Your own divine nature.\n<\/p>\n

For this very reason, You instruct us to make every effort to support the faith we profess with goodness, that we would not bear false witness to Your love for all people. You command us to support goodness with knowledge, that we would not be ignorant of the complexity of the issues we face but wise in our stewardship of Your generosity in this time of asperity.\n<\/p>\n

It is Your expectation that our knowledge be reined in with self- control, that we would not use our intellect or position to abuse or deride those with whom we disagree or oppose.\n<\/p>\n

In these days of contest and crisis, in the throes of this divisive shutdown, You call us to endure with pacific composure, and to reflect, with godliness and mutual concern, a faithful image of Your steadfast loving-kindness to those whom and with whom we serve.\n<\/p>\n

May we so obey and please You as we seek to follow You in this place and in this time.\n<\/p>\n

Eternal Lord God, give our lawmakers this day the wisdom to seek Your guidance and to make time to consider and act on Your precepts. May they not simply embrace the opinions of others, but seek Your truth for their lives. Lord, make them muscular thinkers, not merely reflecting the thoughts of others. Help them to make pleasing You their first priority. We continue our importunity for the ending of this shutdown, particularly pray for our Capitol Police and the many others who are serving without monetary compensation. We pray also for those who are not considered essential workers. Lord, reward them all as only You can. We pray in Your magnificent Name. Amen.\n<\/p>\n

Eternal God, Creator of all things, make haste to minister to our needs. Lord, give our Senators the wisdom to strive to always maintain a clear conscience before You and all people. As our lawmakers hear Your voice through the whisper of conscience, inspire them to inquire of You regarding what more they can do to bring glory to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. May this aspiration prompt them to seek to bring deliverance to captives, the recovery of sight to the ethically blind, and to provide a balm to those who are bruised.\n<\/p>\n

And, Lord, end this government shutdown.\n<\/p>\n

Lord, when it comes down to it, all of us want to live well and act wisely. Though we insist on devising our own plans, brainstorming our own options, too often we come up short, for only Your purpose prevails.\n<\/p>\n

In these days, may we listen for Your inimitable counsel. Silence the noise of argument. Reveal the truth in debate. Humble the proud and give wisdom to those who are willing to reason.\n<\/p>\n

We only make it worse when we try to fix things without Your guidance. We endure the backlash of our own anger when we fail to let Your mercy preside over our hearts.\n<\/p>\n

God, our judge and ruler, we accept Your correction. Grow wisdom in our hearts and clear our heads to receive Your instruction, that we may live to revere You and to yield to Your divine will.\n<\/p>\n

From this posture of humility and faithfulness, may Your design for this day and for our work be fulfilled.\n<\/p>\n

Now to You, the only one who is able to keep us from falling, the only God our Savior, may we bring glory and honor. In the strength found in Your name, we pray. Amen.\n<\/p>\n

Did you clothe the naked? Did you give water to the thirsty? Did you visit the sick? Did you minister to the incarcerated? Did you care for the strangers in your midst?\n<\/p>\n

In so doing, we dare to submit our deeds to Your judgment, our will to Your correction. You, O Lord, will bring to light the things we have hidden, and You will disclose our ulterior purposes. May they be found worthy of You.\n<\/p>\n

Give then Your servants an understanding mind and a discerning heart to judge between right and wrong in the governance of Your people. For without Your guiding presence, Your abiding grace, and Your infinite wisdom, who is able to govern this Nation?\n<\/p>\n

Lord, thank You for Your prevailing providence that sustains us. Thank You for the cease-fire between Gaza and Israel, for the joyful return of hostages, and for the prospect of an even more enduring peace in the Middle East.\n<\/p>\n

Lord, strengthen our lawmakers, empower them to mount up on wings like eagles. Make them one in the common cause of justice, righteousness, and truth.\n<\/p>\n

And, Lord, bring a cease-fire to our legislative combat.\n<\/p>\n

Drive them away from the shadows of a stalemate with our government shutdown, enabling them to find common ground. In times of challenges and trials, may they remember they are serving You.\n<\/p>\n

Lord, as we all trust in Your mercies, surround our Nation and world with the shield of Your favor and protection.\n<\/p>\n

And Lord, we thank You for the progress we are seeing in the Middle East.\n<\/p>\n

Lord, provide our lawmakers today with the music of Your wisdom, that they may bring hope out of despair and joy out of sadness. Increase their faith, hope, and love, that they may receive Your promises.\n<\/p>\n

Teach us all to trust in Your prevailing providence, even in life\u2019s storms, because You are the God who saves us. Hasten the day when we can say: This is the Lord\u2019s doing, and it is wonderful to see.\n<\/p>\n

Open our eyes to perceive the path of blamelessness. Remind us that You set before us guardrails to keep us safe if we are honest and to protect us when we are faithful.\n<\/p>\n

Incline our hearts toward discretion. Lead us on straight paths, and guard us against our own willfulness.\n<\/p>\n

Lord, stay close to our lawmakers as they seek to end this government shutdown. Remind them to trust always in the multitude of Your mercy. Deliver them from the mire of division and despair as You lead them to Your desired destination. Refusing to lean solely on their own wisdom, may our Senators trust You, O God, to choreograph our destinies.\n<\/p>\n

Lord, give our Senators strength, power, and wisdom for these grand and challenging times, empowering them to carve tunnels of hope through mountains of despair. On this third day of the government shutdown, inspire them to work for Your glory in all they think, say, and do. Lord, take their minds and illuminate them with the light of Your divine presence. Equip our Senators for their tasks, that they may be physically fit, mentally alert, and spiritually strong. Create in them the life of purity, honesty, and altruism that contributes to the solution of the problems they face. May they work with perseverance and magnanimity for the new and better day toward which Your divine intentions guide them.\n<\/p>\n

Lord, give them the wisdom to see that there is a practical morality based on absolutes that they should follow. Remind them that they are accountable to You for their thoughts, words, and deeds. During this time of legislative stalemate, help our lawmakers to test all things by their own consciences, seeking to do right as You give them the ability to see it. In these best and worst of times, strengthen our weakness, replacing doubt with faith and fear with courage.\n<\/p>\n

May our lawmakers plant seeds that will bring a harvest for Your glory. Inspire them to seek Your wisdom and guidance as they acknowledge that without You, they can accomplish nothing that will endure. As they seek to be Your ambassadors to our Nation and world, may they remember to use our liberties and privileges bought with so crimson a cost to promote the common good of humanity.\n<\/p>\n

Awesome and Almighty God, we come before You today remembering the powerful principle outlined in Mark 1:35-38.\n<\/p>\n

It says: \u201cVery early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him. When they found him, they exclaimed: Everyone is looking for You.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

God, give us the courage and wisdom to follow the example of Jesus. In the midst of endless demands, may we find time early in the morning to be with You and to seek Your will for our days. Through that time, may You restore us and strengthen us for what lies ahead. Time with You reminds us that we are not abandoned in our journey. Although You have placed great responsibilities on our shoulders, we do not carry this burden alone.\n<\/p>\n

On a number of occasions, King David calls You his fortress, his hiding place, and his refuge. Thank You, God, for being a place we can run to. Truly, there is none like You and none beside You.\n<\/p>\n

May Your blessing and favor rest upon the Members of this body, their teams, their families, and our country. I pray this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.\n<\/p>\n

Lord, use them to challenge the cruelty that divides and wounds humanity. May they be Your instruments to draw people together in order to accomplish Your purposes. Use these efforts to enable America to be a light to nations, leading the way to Your promised Kingdom.\n<\/p>\n

Almighty and wonderful God, You are the creator of the Earth, and You have given breath to every living thing. You have made us in Your own image and given us dominion over the entirety of Your creation.\n<\/p>\n

Who is a God like You, who in Your fathomless love embrace each one of us, desiring nothing more than that we respond to Your grace with righteous living?\n<\/p>\n

Who is a God like You, who despite Your unconditional love and generosity, pardon our iniquity, forgive our rejection of Your intent for our lives, and overlook our numerous transgressions?\n<\/p>\n

Who is a God like You, who does not retain his anger forever but delights in showing clemency?\n<\/p>\n

Who is a God like You, who shows us each Your compassion, who separates us from our sin, casting it into the depths of the sea?\n<\/p>\n

Who is a God like You? Only You, O Lord, and You have shown Your people such faithfulness and such unswerving loyalty to those who call on Your name.\n<\/p>\n

So we call on You in the power of Your name this day that we may today and always, and with our whole being, honor the only God like You. Amen.\n<\/p>\n

Eternal God, before You nations rise and fall. They grow strong or whither by Your design. Help our Nation and world to embrace righteousness and to strive for unity and renewal.\n<\/p>\n

Lord, hasten the coming of Your Kingdom, where pain, tears, and death will be no more. Teach all nations the way of peace so we may plow up battlefields and pound weapons into liberation tools. Teach us to talk across boundaries as brothers and sisters, united by Your love.\n<\/p>\n

Today, inspire our Senators and all who work with them to strive in their efforts to transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows.\n<\/p>\n

And, Lord, we continue to pray for those involved with the Texas flooding.\n<\/p>\n

Father in Heaven, we come to You in the name of Jesus, our crucified, resurrected Savior. We come to You by the power of the Holy Spirit to seek Your blessings on this deliberative body.\n<\/p>\n

We thank You, Lord, for Your constant grace, for Your providing hand, for Your guiding Word. We ask You this day to fill us with Your knowledge, the great knowledge of Your will. Give us wisdom and understanding that we might walk in a manner worthy of being called Your people.\n<\/p>\n

Father, we ask that You make us a righteous people, a joyful people\u2013 joyful in adversity, hopeful in struggle, and just in all our dealings. We pray, Lord, that You would make us a prosperous people, a happy people.\n<\/p>\n

Lord, You have told us what is good and what You expect of us: to do justice and to love mercy and to walk humbly with You, our God. May we, this day, flourish in kindness and strive for goodness under Your gracious and sovereign hand.\n<\/p>\n

Father, we confess how good it is to live in this country. We pray that You would continually empower us to be the land of the free and the home of the brave.\n<\/p>\n
