As the government shutdown continues, the loss of wages is crippling our already-strained air travel industry. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently announced that, if the shutdown continues into next week, the Department of Transportation may have to close portions of U.S. airspace.\n<\/p>\n

During a press conference on Tuesday, Duffy\u00a0explained\u00a0that the longer the government shutdown goes on, Americans working jobs where they have not received a paycheck during the shutdown are \u201cforced to make decisions and choices\u201d about whether to continue working in their current jobs or get a different job.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThe longer this goes on, every day these hardworking Americans have bills they have to pay, and they\u2019re being forced to make decisions and choices,\u201d he said. \u201cDo they go to work as an air traffic controller, or do they have to find a different job to get resources, money, to put food on their table, to put gas in their car. As every day goes by, I think the problem is going to only get worse, not better.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you bring us to a week from today, Democrats, you will see mass chaos,\u201d Duffy said. \u201cYou will see mass flight delays, you\u2019ll see mass cancellations, and you may see us close certain parts of the airspace because we just can not manage it, because we don\u2019t have the air traffic controllers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Our nation was already suffering from a shortage of air traffic controllers before the shutdown, and a lack of pay has only exasperated the issue.
