“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
John 2 opens the public ministry of Jesus at a wedding where something runs out, and in that moment, Jesus changes how we see God’s timing. After turning water into wine, the governor says, “You have kept the good wine until now.” Not someday. Not later. But now. That single word confronts the way many people live spiritually, always waiting for a better season, a greater move of God, or a breakthrough somewhere in the future. But Jesus steps into that moment and shows that God is not only the God of later, He is the God of now.
Hebrews 11:1 brings that truth into focus when it declares, “Now faith is.” Faith is not delayed hope. It is present trust. It is what you hold in your hands today while you are still waiting for what God promised. The same God who worked in Cana is still working in present tense power. He is not waiting for conditions to improve before He moves. He moves in the now.
The enemy works hard to steal that reality. He uses two thieves to rob people of their present life with God. One thief is yesterday, pulling you back into regret, shame, or even nostalgia that keeps you stuck in what cannot be changed. The other thief is someday, always pushing obedience and joy into a future that never arrives. Between those two lies the crucifixion of your today. But Jesus never promised you yesterday, and He never guaranteed you tomorrow. He gave you now.
Scripture is filled with people who understood this. Noah built now. Abraham obeyed now. Moses chose God’s people now. Rahab acted now. And in every generation, faith has always lived in present tense obedience. No one in Hebrews 11 succeeded by waiting for perfect timing. They moved when God spoke in their moment.
So the question becomes simple but serious. What will you do with your now? Because now is where faith lives. Now is where repentance happens. Now is where worship rises. Now is where obedience begins. Now is where the first step of your future is formed. Jesus is still revealing His best in present-tense moments. He is still saying to His people, I have kept the good wine until now.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of today. Forgive me for the times I have lived in yesterday or delayed obedience into someday. Teach me to walk in now faith. Help me trust You, obey You, and worship You in this moment. Open my eyes to see that Your best is not far away but already working in my present life. Strengthen my heart to live fully for You today. In Jesus name, Amen.
