“Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.” Exodus 3:5

Moses was not on a mountaintop when God found him. He was on the backside of the desert, tending sheep in obscurity. Yet the Scripture says he came to the mountain of God, even there. That is the mystery of God’s ways. He often leads us through dry and hidden places, not to abandon us, but to prepare us. In that wilderness, Moses saw a bush burning, but it was not consumed. God was revealing something powerful. You can burn on for Him without burning out. When His fire fills your life, it does not destroy you; it sustains you.

When Moses turned aside to see the burning bush, God spoke. That turning matters. Many pass by holy moments because they never pause to look. But when Moses gave his attention, God called his name and said, “Take off your shoes.” This was more than a command; it was an invitation into the barefoot presence of God. To stand barefoot meant to recognize holiness, remove barriers, and come humbly before Him. It was a call to awareness that where God is, everything changes.

There are three meanings to going barefoot in the presence of God:

First, it speaks of surrender. Moses had once run from his calling after killing the Egyptian. Now God was saying, turn in your running gear. You are not going to run from My purpose anymore. In the same way, the prodigal son returned home barefoot, a sign that his wandering was over. Many people still run from what God is asking, but the presence of God requires surrender. You cannot carry His presence while running from His will. You have to lay it down and say, I am here to stay.

Second, going barefoot speaks of sensitivity. When your feet are uncovered, you become careful where you step. God desires that same tenderness in our walk with Him. In the Old Testament, priests were anointed on their feet, symbolizing a consecrated walk. The oil would run down and leave footprints behind them. That is the kind of life we are called to live, one that leaves evidence of His presence everywhere we go. To walk barefoot before God is to live aware, careful, and set apart.

Third, going barefoot speaks of servanthood. In Bible times, slaves did not wear shoes. Removing sandals was a sign of ownership and surrender of rights. When God told Moses to take off his shoes, He was saying, you belong to Me. When Moses later faced Pharaoh, he did not ask for an army or resources. What he needed was the presence of God. Because when you have His presence, you have His power, His protection, and His provision. Everything you need is found there. The call today is simple but costly. Take off your shoes. Lay down your independence. Stop running. And step into the barefoot presence of God, where His fire fills you, and His presence leads you.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to live barefoot before You in surrender, sensitivity, and servanthood. I lay down my running and give You every part of my life. Make my heart tender to Your voice and my steps careful in Your will. Let my life carry the evidence of Your presence wherever I go. Amen.
