Taiwan’s leaders are speaking out after President Trump raised concerns about U.S military support for the island.
President Trump said he and China’s President Xi Jinping discussed an upcoming arms sale to Taiwan in great detail during last week’s summit.
Xi brought up U.S. support for Taiwan in a private meeting, warning Trump that if handled poorly it could lead to “an extremely dangerous situation.”
Taiwan’s status remains one of the most sensitive and volatile issues in U.S.-China relations. Beijing considers the self-ruled island part of China and has repeatedly warned that it could use military force to bring Taiwan under its control if necessary.
While administration officials have said U.S. policy toward Taiwan has not changed, President Trump declined to fully commit to a proposed $14 billion defense package aimed at strengthening the island against growing Chinese military threats. The president emphasized concerns about becoming entangled in another distant conflict, saying, “The last thing we need right now is a war that’s 9,500 miles away.”
Meanwhile, Taiwanese officials are continuing to push for strong American support, arguing that Taiwan is simply trying to defend itself against increasing aggression from Beijing. Reports that Trump advisers fear a Chinese invasion within the next five years have only intensified concerns about stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The situation highlights the growing geopolitical tension between the United States and China as both nations compete for influence, security, and economic dominance around the world. Any conflict involving Taiwan would have enormous consequences not only for Asia, but for global trade, military alliances, and international stability.
As intercessors, we should pray for wisdom and restraint among world leaders and for peace in regions threatened by conflict. In a world increasingly marked by tension and uncertainty, let’s ask God to protect innocent lives and guide nations away from war.
