“But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.” 1 John 2:20 (NIV)
There is something powerful about the difference between human effort and divine anointing. You can have talent without power, skill without presence, and activity without impact. But when the anointing of God is on something, everything changes. That is why Scripture says you already have an anointing from the Holy One. It is not reserved for a select few; it is given to those who belong to Him.
The anointing is what separates ordinary from extraordinary. It is the difference between singing and Spirit-filled worship, between speaking and Spirit-led preaching, between doing life and living empowered by God. The anointing makes the difference. But the anointing is not only about ability, it is about presence. Scripture describes oil being poured out in abundance, flowing from the head down, saturating everything it touches. It is not a light touch; it is a covering. God does not call us to live with just a memory of His presence, but with a continual flow of fresh oil.
Yet fresh oil often comes from pressure. In Scripture, spices were crushed before they released their fragrance. In the same way, many times what God uses most is what has been through the most. Pressure does not destroy the anointing; it releases it. What feels like breaking can actually be preparation for overflow.
There is also a danger of becoming familiar with what was once fresh. What God poured out yesterday cannot carry you today. That is why the psalmist said, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.” Not leftover oil. Not old oil. Fresh oil. Some people are still trying to live off a past encounter, a past season, a past fire. But God is calling His people back to renewal. Back to dependence. Back to hunger. Because fresh oil is for today’s assignment, not yesterday’s memory.
And here is the promise: when God anoints you, He brings out what He already placed in you. Gifts that were dormant come alive. Worship that was quiet becomes powerful. Purpose that was hidden becomes visible. The anointing draws the best out of your life for His glory.
Prayer: Lord, I thank You for the anointing You have placed on my life. I do not want to live off yesterday’s oil or a past encounter with You. Renew me again. Pour fresh oil over my heart, my mind, and my calling. Break what needs to be broken so that what is inside of me can be released for Your glory. Let my life carry Your presence, not just my ability. Anoint me afresh today so that everything I do reflects Your power and Your Spirit. I surrender myself to You again and ask for fresh oil for a new season. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
