From Breitbart:
The nation’s Catholic bishops gathered Thursday afternoon in Orlando for a liturgy consecrating the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, drawing on a centuries-old devotion to mark the country’s 250th anniversary.
Organ, brass and choral singing thundered inside a modern Orlando shrine during the service, a centerpiece of the spring assembly of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Just before the liturgy, bishops and other worshippers knelt before relics of the 17th century St. Mary Margaret Alacoque, a French nun whose reports of visions of Jesus led to the modern devotion of the Sacred Heart as embodying the core of Christ’s suffering love. Since then, the devotion has spread worldwide, with many Catholic schools and churches bearing the Sacred Heart name and many homes and businesses displaying images of it.
The consecration marked the first time the United States has formally been dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in this manner. The devotion traces its roots back centuries but became especially prominent after the visions reported by St. Mary Margaret Alacoque in the 1600s. In Catholic tradition, the Sacred Heart symbolizes Christ’s love, mercy, and sacrifice for humanity.
The timing of the service was significant, coming as the nation prepares to celebrate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. During the liturgy, church leaders reflected on both the blessings and shortcomings of American history. Oklahoma City Archbishop Paul Coakley emphasized that true consecration means allowing Christ’s love to shape every aspect of life while honestly acknowledging times when both the nation and the Church have fallen short of that calling.
The bishops also connected the consecration to the teachings of Pope Francis, whose final encyclical highlighted the Sacred Heart as an inspiration for justice, service, and compassion. The presence of relics from St. Mary Margaret Alacoque, brought from France specifically for the occasion, underscored the historic and spiritual significance of the event.
Alongside the consecration, the bishops addressed another important issue during their assembly: revisions to the Church’s policies on clergy sexual abuse. The approved changes reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to protecting children while adding provisions regarding due process for accused priests during investigations. Church leaders stressed that the core policy remains unchanged—priests found to have abused children are permanently removed from ministry.
The consecration serves as a reminder that America’s deepest needs cannot be solved by politics alone. Whether Catholic, Protestant, or from another Christian tradition, followers of Christ can agree that our nation needs spiritual renewal, repentance, and a return to the love and truth found in Jesus. As America approaches this historic milestone, let’s pray for revival, healing, and a renewed commitment to living out biblical values in every sphere of society.
