After results began pouring in after the election on Tuesday night, the democratic socialist candidate Janeese Lewis George appeared poised to clinch the Democratic nomination, and thus secure the mayor’s seat in a general election with no opposition. D.C. is employing ranked-choice voting for the first time this year, and therefore the results are still not final as votes from the lagging candidates are reallocated. At the time of this writing, Lewis George leads her main opponent, Kenyan McDuffie, by about 53% to 37%.

President Donald Trump said last week that a Lewis George election victory would be bad for the city and warned that it may prompt him to take a more direct role in running the nation’s capital.
“I wouldn’t like it,” Trump said of a potential Lewis George victory. “And maybe we take back Washington, run it on the federal basis. We won’t put up with it. We’re not going to lose our businesses.”
Unlike Bowser, who took a more practical position, Lewis George expressed firm opposition to President Trump’s federal takeover of the city’s police department and the ongoing National Guard deployment. If elected mayor, President Trump could face a city government more opposed to his plans for the capital.
Lewis George’s apparent victory comes at a pivotal moment for Washington. Under President Trump, the federal government has taken an increasingly active role in the city, particularly regarding crime reduction and immigration enforcement. Last summer, Trump temporarily assumed control of the Metropolitan Police Department and deployed National Guard troops to support local law enforcement. Administration officials argued the measures were necessary to address public safety concerns and restore order in areas experiencing elevated crime.
Outgoing Mayor Muriel Bowser initially resisted federal intervention but later acknowledged improvements in public safety and thanked the administration for providing additional resources. Her approach often placed her between progressive activists and federal officials, allowing her to maintain a working relationship with the White House despite policy disagreements.
Lewis George, however, has built her political career on challenging that approach. A member of Washington’s city council and an outspoken democratic socialist, she has supported policies including government-owned housing initiatives, higher minimum wages, and reduced reliance on traditional policing strategies. During her first campaign for city council in 2020, she backed efforts associated with the “Defund the Police” movement and advocated reducing police presence in schools. More recently, she has emphasized support for public safety while distancing herself from some of her earlier positions.
The mayor-elect has also been a vocal critic of federal immigration enforcement in the District. She has condemned ICE operations and opposed what she describes as federal overreach into local affairs. Those positions have made her a favorite among progressive activists but have also raised concerns among supporters of the Trump administration’s efforts to strengthen law enforcement and immigration enforcement in the capital.
The outcome of this race may ultimately become a test case for the broader political struggle unfolding in many major American cities. As progressive candidates continue gaining influence in urban areas, Washington could become a high-profile battleground between local leaders seeking greater autonomy and a federal government determined to shape the direction of the nation’s capital.
