After Iran’s unprecedented attacks on U.S. military bases during Operation Epic Fury, defense officials are reportedly reconsidering whether America’s long-standing military posture in the Persian Gulf remains sustainable. While President Trump’s decisive response restored deterrence against Iran, military leaders are now examining how best to protect American forces from evolving missile and drone threats.

    From Fox News:

The Gulf base network is how the U.S. responds quickly to Iran, protects shipping lanes, reassures Arab partners and keeps pressure on ISIS and al Qaeda. If the Pentagon reduces or disperses that footprint, it could make U.S. forces harder to hit — but also slower to surge in a crisis.

For decades, the tradeoff was straightforward: the closer U.S. forces were to the fight, the faster they could respond. But Operation Epic Fury reignited a long-running debate over whether concentrating aircraft, ships, command centers and thousands of troops at a handful of large Gulf bases had become an increasingly dangerous liability in an era of precision missiles and drones.

    …

The Pentagon has spent decades building a network of Gulf bases designed to put aircraft, ships and troops within minutes of potential crises across the Middle East. That strategy relied on concentrating combat power at a handful of large installations that offered unmatched access to the region.

Operation Epic Fury dramatically changed the strategic conversation by exposing just how vulnerable these installations have become. According to the report, Iran launched more than 8,000 missiles and drones at U.S. positions throughout the conflict, targeting major installations in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. Although U.S. and allied air defenses intercepted the overwhelming majority of incoming weapons, the campaign demonstrated that nearly every major American base in the Gulf is now within striking distance of Iran’s expanding missile arsenal.

Military officials emphasized that American forces remained effective throughout the conflict despite the attacks. Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins, speaking on behalf of U.S. Central Command, noted that protecting personnel was the top priority and that only two of the thousands of Iranian missiles and drones resulted in U.S. fatalities. Even so, the conflict reportedly left some facilities damaged and prompted defense planners to revisit discussions that had already been underway about dispersing aircraft, command centers, logistics hubs, and personnel across a broader network of locations.

Among the options reportedly under consideration are moving some operations farther west, relocating certain functions to Israel, placing additional command facilities underground, and reducing reliance on large permanent installations in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Defense officials stress that no decisions have been made, but they continue to evaluate America’s force posture as conditions in the region evolve. Former commanders also caution that no location is completely beyond Iran’s reach, making resilience and flexibility just as important as distance.

These discussions highlight an important reality: modern warfare is changing rapidly. Precision-guided missiles, drones, and other advanced weapons are forcing militaries around the world to rethink strategies that proved successful in previous decades. As the United States seeks to deter Iran, combat terrorism, protect allies, and preserve stability in the Middle East, military leaders must balance rapid response capabilities with the safety of America’s servicemen and women. Let’s pray for wisdom as leaders make decisions that affect both national security and the lives of those serving overseas.

Share your prayers for America’s troops and leaders as they navigate these critical national security decisions below.
