The decision also raises questions about the role of the federal government in elections. While the Constitution gives states primary responsibility for administering elections, the EAC provides guidance, distributes federal funding, and helps maintain standards for voting systems used across the country. With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, changes to the commission’s leadership are likely to draw significant attention.

    From Breitbart:

While the White House statement did not offer a specific reason for Trump’s action, the commission has previously declined to change the national voter registration form to require documentation of an applicant’s U.S. citizenship, as Trump’s urged in a sweeping March 2025 executive order on U.S. elections. A federal judge blocked the order, ruling it exceeds the president’s authority since the U.S. Constitution grants authority over elections management and oversight to Congress and the states. The administration has indicated it will appeal.

It was not clear whether Trump planned to nominate new members immediately or leave the positions vacant — a move that, months ahead of midterm elections, could prevent the agency from distributing new grants to state or local elections offices and, at the least, complicate its role in overseeing testing and certification of voting systems around the country.

“The Administration from the start has been working across all agencies and local partners to safeguard elections from fraud and abuse, and investing in a strong infrastructure to sustain that mission especially in the midterm elections,” the White House said.

Congress established the Election Assistance Commission through the Help America Vote Act of 2002 following concerns raised by the 2000 presidential election. The bipartisan commission is responsible for assisting state and local election officials by distributing federal grants, certifying voting systems, and maintaining the national voter registration form. By law, it consists of two Democrats and two Republicans who are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

According to the White House, President Trump removed Democratic commissioners Thomas Hicks and Benjamin Hovland. Republican Commissioner Christy McCormick also resigned, while former Republican Commissioner Donald Palmer had previously left the agency. The White House cited the administration’s commitment to election security, and the president’s action follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that expanded presidential authority to remove members of certain independent federal agencies. Whether the administration will move quickly to nominate replacements remains unclear.

Election integrity continues to be an issue of deep concern for many Americans, including us intercessors who believe government should administer elections with fairness, transparency, and accountability. At the same time, disputes over the proper balance of power between the federal government and the states underscore the importance of constitutional governance. As legal challenges continue and policymakers debate election reforms, let us pray for wisdom for elected officials, integrity in the electoral process, and leaders who faithfully uphold justice and the rule of law.
