The United States and Saudi Arabia have reached a major nuclear agreement, and it is getting attention from both supporters and critics. The deal would let American companies help Saudi Arabia build and develop nuclear power plants for civilian energy use.

The agreement, which requires congressional approval, could expand Saudi Arabia’s nuclear capabilities, with some raising questions over nonproliferation safeguards.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States would not enter into any agreement that creates a risk of nuclear proliferation.
The deal comes as the United States continues military operations against Iran, with the Trump administration maintaining that Tehran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.
For years, U.S. policy said Saudi Arabia would only get nuclear cooperation if it normalized relations with Israel. That condition was quietly dropped as negotiations moved forward. Now, experts say what really matters is whether the deal allows Saudi Arabia to enrich its own uranium and whether strong international oversight is included. Those details have not yet been made public. The concern is real: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has said before that if Iran gets a nuclear weapon, Saudi Arabia will seek one too. The kingdom also signed a defense agreement with Pakistan, which already has nuclear weapons, making some analysts even more uneasy.
Congress will have a chance to review the deal, but stopping it would require a veto-proof majority, which is a very high bar. Secretary Rubio has been clear that the U.S. will not sign anything that puts nuclear weapons within easier reach of bad actors.
Let us pray that the nuclear agreement will help end the war in the Middle-East, that Saudi Arabia would be responsible with their handling of nuclear weapons, and that President Trump will have the wisdom needed as he continues to broker agreements and bring peace to the Middle-East.
