The Justice Department just uncovered a massive fraud scheme — about $350 million worth — spread across the Southeastern United States, the Daily Caller has learned. The fraud touched several government programs, including SNAP food benefits, small business loans, housing assistance, and taxes.

In total, officials found 17 separate cases across seven states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The DOJ worked closely with state officials in each of these states to catch the fraud, and they’re expected to formally announce the cases this week.

Moving forward, all seven states have agreed to share more information with the DOJ. This means federal officials will now have access to public business records and benefits payment data from these states, which should make it easier to spot fraud early.
“Defeating the fraud epidemic in our country requires all-hands-on-deck from our federal and state partners nationwide,” said Colin M. McDonald, an Assistant Attorney General with the DOJ’s fraud division, in a statement to the Caller.
“When federal prosecutors work alongside state agencies to root out fraud, fraudsters lose and the American people win,” he added.
Some of the individual cases are pretty shocking. In Mississippi, a lawyer who also worked for the Small Business Administration is accused of running an $11.5 million kickback scheme with several other people, including a former IRS worker. In North Carolina, eight people allegedly filed fake tax returns using bogus COVID-19 tax credits, stealing almost $25 million. Down in Louisiana, two people are accused of submitting $174 million in false Medicare claims for unnecessary medical testing. And in Florida, a former housing authority employee allegedly stole tenants’ personal information to pocket half a million dollars in rent assistance meant for people in need.
Before making the announcement, the DOJ held a roundtable meeting with state leaders to talk through their fraud-fighting strategies. That meeting brought together 18 U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, seven state Attorneys General, and more than 50 other officials.
Cracking down on fraud has become a big priority for the Trump administration. Earlier this year, the White House started an Anti-Fraud Task Force, led by Vice President J.D. Vance, and the DOJ created a brand-new position just to focus on fighting fraud nationwide. A lot of this push actually started after YouTuber Nick Shirley uncovered nearly a dozen fake daycare centers in Minnesota that were taking government money without providing any real childcare.
The administration has kept building relationships with states to fight fraud together. Back in May, Vice President Vance visited Maine for his very first fraud-related event, telling the crowd: “Because you all work hard, because you all pay your taxes, because you do things the right way, it is time to have leadership in Washington that treats you the right way and protects those hard-earned tax dollars.”
The Bible is clear that honesty matters, especially when it comes to money. Proverbs 11:1 says, “A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight.” Stealing from programs meant to help people in need isn’t just illegal — it goes against basic values of honesty and fairness that we are called to live out. When leaders work to stop fraud and protect taxpayer money, it’s a step toward the kind of justice and integrity scripture consistently points us toward.
