A hiring decision in North Carolina’s largest school district is drawing statewide attention after parents and lawmakers questioned a school’s decision to hire a transgender elementary teacher without notifying families. The controversy has expanded into a broader debate over parental rights, school transparency, and education policy ahead of a closely watched U.S. Senate race.

Let the IFA community know how to pray for you.

    From Breitbart:

State Rep. Erin Paré, a Republican, said she received concerns in a post on X “from parents and some teachers about a new music teacher at a southern Wake elementary school who is transgender and recently attended a school function dressed in a dress as a biological man.” Paré floated the possibility of legislation outlining gender-specific workplace attire in a future legislation session.

The next day, Paré received death threats, according to the Raleigh News & Observer.

The outlet reported comments from Wake County School Board member Lynn Edmonds defending the hire.

The controversy centers on Middle Creek Elementary School, which serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. According to the report, Principal Dr. Sarah Stephens has declined to comment publicly about the hiring, while a back-to-school update to parents reportedly made no mention of the issue. The school district has previously faced scrutiny over its spending on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, with reports indicating that Wake County Public Schools spent more than $8.6 million on equity-related efforts in recent years.

The issue has also become entangled in North Carolina’s high-profile Senate race. Republican candidate Michael Whatley criticized the school and connected the controversy to his broader concerns about gender ideology in education. Democrat Roy Cooper, the state’s former governor, has previously vetoed legislation involving women’s sports, gender-transition procedures for minors, and a parents’ bill of rights, making education and parental authority likely campaign issues in the months ahead.

As intercessors, this story reminds us to pray for wisdom for parents, educators, and elected officials as they navigate difficult cultural issues affecting children. Scripture teaches that parents bear primary responsibility for raising and instructing their children (see Deuteronomy 6:6–7), while those entrusted with leadership should exercise wisdom and integrity. Let’s pray for truth, transparency, and policies that protect both children and families.

Share your prayers and scriptures for North Carolina’s schools, students, parents, and leaders in the comments.
