During Intercessors for America’s August First Friday webcast, IFA President and CEO David Kubal welcomed psychiatrist and brain health expert Dr. Daniel Amen for a fascinating conversation about how the Lord’s Prayer aligns with the way God designed the human brain. Drawing from decades of research and his forthcoming book, The Neuroscience of the Lord’s Prayer, Dr. Amen explained how Christ’s model prayer brings hope, peace, and renewed thinking while pointing believers toward God’s purposes.

Dr. Amen, a board-certified psychiatrist and founder of Amen Clinics, has spent decades studying brain health through advanced imaging techniques. During the webcast, he explained that the Lord’s Prayer is far more than a familiar passage to recite—it is a purposeful framework that calms anxious minds while strengthening wise decision-making. According to Dr. Amen, every part of the prayer engages the brain in ways that promote emotional stability, healthy relationships, and spiritual growth.
One of the central themes of the discussion was the idea that God created human beings with both emotion and reason. Dr. Amen described the emotional brain as an “elephant” and the thinking brain as its “rider.” When emotions dominate unchecked, people often make poor decisions. Prayer, however, helps strengthen the brain’s executive functions while teaching us to submit both our thoughts and emotions to God’s wisdom.
Walking phrase by phrase through the Lord’s Prayer, Dr. Amen explained how each section answers a fundamental question every human mind asks. Beginning with “Our Father,” the prayer reminds us that we belong to God’s family before we accomplish anything. Looking toward heaven cultivates awe, quieting the constant internal chatter that often fuels anxiety and self-criticism. He also encouraged viewers to take unhealthy thoughts captive through the lens of Scripture rather than accepting every negative thought as truth.
The conversation continued through the remaining portions of the prayer. “Thy kingdom come” points believers toward purpose and hope, while “Thy will be done” challenges every decision to be measured against God’s will. Dr. Amen described “daily bread” as an invitation to trust God for today’s needs instead of living in regret over the past or fear about the future. He also emphasized forgiveness as one of the most powerful ways to experience peace, explaining that holding onto bitterness damages both spiritual and emotional health.
Throughout the webcast, David Kubal paused several times to lead participants in praying the Lord’s Prayer together and invited viewers to reflect on each phrase more intentionally. Rather than rushing through familiar words, Dr. Amen encouraged believers to slow down, breathe deeply, and meditate on each petition, allowing the prayer to shape both their minds and hearts over time.
The discussion also looked beyond individual spiritual growth. Dr. Amen noted that Jesus originally taught the Lord’s Prayer to a community of disciples, making it a corporate prayer for the Church as much as a personal one. As believers unite around God’s kingdom, forgiveness, wisdom, and discernment, the prayer becomes a powerful guide for strengthening the Church’s witness and influence in the nation.
Near the close of the webcast, Dr. Amen introduced his new “Amen Whole 4” initiative, a church-based program focused on physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual health. He also shared his vision for a national “Decade of Brain Health,” an effort being developed alongside faith leaders and government partners to help address growing challenges such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, and poor physical health among Americans. Kubal closed by encouraging intercessors to pray for Dr. Amen, his ministry, and the work God is doing through this new focus on whole-person health.
