Michigan’s U.S. Senate race has become a flashpoint for concerns about political candidates accepting financial support from organizations with alleged terror ties. Democrat nominee Abdul El-Sayed is facing intense scrutiny after federal campaign finance records revealed he received more than $115,000 from individuals connected to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a group that has been dogged by allegations of links to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood for nearly two decades.

The donations came from at least 41 current or former CAIR officials and leaders spanning both the organization’s national leadership and state chapters across the country. Among those contributors was El-Sayed’s own father-in-law, Jukaku Tayeb, who serves on CAIR-Michigan’s board and has reportedly supported a super PAC backing his son-in-law’s Senate campaign. El-Sayed has also appeared at CAIR events and was paid for a 2022 speaking engagement where he criticized Oklahoma’s ban on Sharia law.
CAIR describes itself as a Muslim civil rights organization dedicated to protecting the rights of American Muslims, and it firmly denies any connection to terrorism, Hamas, or the Muslim Brotherhood. However, the organization’s controversial history tells a more complicated story. In 2007, CAIR was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing case, one of the largest terrorism financing prosecutions in U.S. history. During that case, a federal court reviewing the evidence found what it described as “ample evidence” linking the organization to Hamas, the designated terrorist group that governs Gaza and carried out the October 7, 2023, massacre in Israel.
The controversy surrounding CAIR has persisted in recent years. Following Hamas’s brutal attack on Israel that killed approximately 1,200 people, CAIR’s Executive Director Nihad Awad made public remarks that drew sharp criticism and prompted the former Biden administration to sever CAIR’s participation in a national initiative aimed at combating anti-Semitism. The rebuke signaled growing discomfort even among officials who had previously worked with the organization.
Federal scrutiny of CAIR extends well beyond past court cases and controversial statements. The Department of Health and Human Services is currently investigating approximately $30 million in federal refugee resettlement funding that was awarded to CAIR affiliates in California and Washington. The investigation cites concerns over the organization’s business practices and potential connections to the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. CAIR has disputed these allegations as unfounded.
Some states have taken definitive action. In 2025, Texas Governor Greg Abbott designated both CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist and transnational criminal organizations within the state of Texas. Abbott’s unprecedented move reflected a broader wave of scrutiny that state and federal officials have directed at organizations with alleged extremist ties operating in American political and civic spaces.
As Michigan voters prepare to head to the polls, El-Sayed’s financial ties to CAIR-affiliated donors are becoming a central issue in the Senate race. Critics argue that a candidate’s financial relationships reveal important information about the people and causes that will shape his priorities if elected to office. They point to the sheer volume of contributions from CAIR-linked individuals and the familial connection as particularly troubling. Supporters of El-Sayed maintain that accepting donations from individuals does not equate to endorsing an organization’s full history or controversial associations, and they argue that the focus on CAIR is an attempt to unfairly paint the candidate as sympathetic to extremism.
The debate over El-Sayed’s campaign financing highlights broader questions about transparency, accountability, and the influence of organizations under federal investigation on American elections. Voters will ultimately decide whether these ties are disqualifying or whether they represent an overblown concern in a race that will help determine control of the U.S. Senate.
For us intercessors committed to praying for righteous leadership and the safety of our communities, the financial connections between political candidates and organizations facing serious allegations of terrorism ties deserve careful, discerning attention. Scripture calls us to seek leaders who value truth, justice, and the protection of the vulnerable, and financial relationships with groups under federal investigation for potential extremist connections raise legitimate questions that voters have a responsibility to examine. The principle found in scripture to test all things and hold fast to what is good extends to how we evaluate those who seek positions of public trust. As believers, let us pray for transparency in this election, for voters to exercise wisdom and discernment, and for leaders across our nation who will govern with integrity and genuine concern for the safety and well-being of all Americans, our Jewish neighbors, and allies. The decisions made at the ballot box have real consequences for the moral direction of our country and the security of our communities.
