Another Democratic official has come out against the Michigan party’s controversial nominee for the senate, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, and is endorsing Republican Mike Rogers in the November general election, Politics & Poll Tracker reported.
Michael La Rosa, who served as press secretary for none other than First Lady Jill Biden, threw his support behind the former Republican congressman Friday morning.
LaRosa posted the following quote on his X account:
“After decades of giving my all for Democratic House and Senate candidates, this fall I will support — and contribute to — Mike Rogers, Michigan’s GOP Senate nominee, instead. And I’ll do everything I can to make sure other Democrats follow.”
The statement LaRosa shared originally came from longtime Democratic attorney Julian Epstein, a former chief counsel for the House Judiciary Committee. Epstein publicly announced his support for Rogers in a New York Post op-ed following El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan’s Democratic primary.
Epstein framed his decision as a response to what he sees as the growing influence of democratic socialism within his party. He argued that Democrats have failed to confront ideological movements on their left and specifically criticized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s defense of the Democratic Party as a “big tent.”
El-Sayed’s nomination has brought those ideological divisions into sharper focus. The former Michigan health official has not joined the Democratic Socialists of America, but he has attracted support from prominent figures associated with the movement, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. He has also campaigned alongside political streamer Hasan Piker.
El-Sayed has taken a number of positions that distinguish him from more moderate Democrats. He has advocated abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, previously called for defunding police in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, and has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.
Rogers, meanwhile, previously represented Michigan in the U.S. House and chaired the House Intelligence Committee. His race against El-Sayed will help determine control of a Senate seat that has attracted significant national attention, making Michigan one of the states to watch as voters head toward November.
The public defections of LaRosa and Epstein are especially notable because they represent Democrats openly crossing party lines rather than simply criticizing their party’s nominee. Whether other Democratic voters follow them remains to be seen, but the controversy underscores broader questions about the ideological direction of both Michigan and national politics.
