A political movement once considered fringe is now winning elections across the country, and its platform includes proposals that would have seemed unthinkable in mainstream American politics just a decade ago. The Democratic Socialists of America, an organization whose leaders openly identify as Marxist and communist, is celebrating a wave of primary victories, with candidates now poised to hold significant power in cities and states nationwide.

For Christians who care about justice, government accountability, and the rule of law, the rapid rise of this movement raises serious questions about the direction of American governance and the values shaping the next generation of political leaders.
The DSA’s platform includes radical proposals to defund, and eventually abolish, the “police and prison system,” which the organization argues is slanted for the benefit of the rich. Similar comments made by DSA-backed candidates have stirred controversy.
“Demilitarize police departments, disempower police unions, and redirect funding to public services as steps towards fully abolishing the police and prison system which protects the rich and jails the poor,” the DSA’s program reads.
Francesca Hong, the DSA member vying for the gubernatorial nomination in Wisconsin, has worked to distance herself from prior social media posts from years ago in which she argued for abolishing police. “I support defunding the police as a first step towards abolishing the police,” Hong posted in 2020, echoing the modern DSA policy platform.
The DSA’s ambitions extend far beyond police reform. The organization’s newly released platform calls for abolishing the U.S. Senate entirely, replacing the presidency and Supreme Court with a body appointed by and subordinate to Congress, ending immigration enforcement including the abolition of ICE, and nationalizing major corporations and industries. DSA national co-chair Megan Romer confirmed these positions in a Fox News interview, affirming that the organization supports abolishing the Senate, replacing the presidency and Supreme Court, ending immigration enforcement, defunding the military, and eventually abolishing police and prisons altogether. Romer belongs to the DSA’s Red Star caucus, which explicitly states its ultimate goal is the overthrow of capitalism and the establishment of communism in the United States.
The movement’s electoral success is no longer isolated. DSA-affiliated candidates now lead in New York City and are positioned to dominate its congressional delegation, while candidates have also won races in Colorado, Michigan, and down-ballot contests in states including Oregon, California, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Utah, and Maryland. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a DSA member, has already begun implementing pieces of this agenda, including a city-run grocery store initiative and repeated public calls to abolish ICE. In Wisconsin, DSA member Francesca Hong is leading polls for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in a state President Trump won in 2024, testing whether this platform can succeed even in politically competitive territory.
Scripture consistently affirms the God-given role of government in restraining evil and maintaining order, as Romans 13 makes clear that governing authorities are established by God to punish wrongdoing and protect the innocent. A political platform that seeks to abolish police, prisons, and core constitutional institutions represents a direct challenge to this biblical framework for civil order. Christians should pray for discernment among voters, wisdom for lawmakers, and a renewed commitment to justice and the protection of communities, particularly the vulnerable who often suffer most when law enforcement and order break down.
