America Just Hit $40 Trillion in Debt

For the first time in American history, the national debt has crossed $40 trillion. The milestone passed quietly on August 18, 2026, with little fanfare from Washington — but budget watchdogs, economists, and anyone paying attention know this is not just a number. It is a flashing red warning light for the future of this nation.

Find out when your state prays.

    From the Washington Times:

The U.S. federal debt crossed $40 trillion for the first time, reaching $40,047,425,768,420.22 as of Tuesday, according to Treasury Department data. The debt held by the public alone — the portion owed to outside investors — stands at approximately $32.3 trillion, nearly matching the entire U.S. gross domestic product of roughly $34 trillion. Debt held by the public at nearly 100 percent of GDP is widely viewed by economists as a fiscal red flag.

The only comparable moment in American history came after World War II, when massive wartime borrowing pushed debt to similar levels relative to the economy. But that debt declined substantially in the postwar decades as the economy grew and spending was brought under control. Current projections offer no such relief. The Congressional Budget Office projects nearly $2 trillion in annual deficits through the rest of the decade, with no serious plan from either party to change course.

Budget watchdogs sounded the alarm at the milestone. Maya MacGuineas of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and Michael A. Peterson of the Peterson Foundation both cited the compounding dangers: inflationary pressure, higher interest costs, reduced funding for other national priorities, vulnerability in future emergencies, and the crowding out of private investment. Rep. Jodey Arrington, Republican chairman of the House Budget Committee, called for a balanced-budget constitutional amendment through an Article V convention.

It took the United States from its founding until 2017 to accumulate $20 trillion in debt. It took only four more years to reach $30 trillion. It has now crossed $40 trillion in roughly four years after that. The pace is not slowing — it is accelerating. The Social Security Fairness Act alone is projected to add $200 billion in new spending over the next decade, and neither party has presented a serious plan to address the structural drivers of the debt. The Trump administration points to eliminating fraud and waste, while Democrats call for tax increases on wealthy Americans. Watchdogs say both approaches fall far short of what the math requires.

This is a spiritual issue, not just a fiscal one. Scripture warns repeatedly about the bondage of debt: “The borrower is slave to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7). A government that mortgages its children’s future to fund its present appetites is not operating under the fear of God. It is operating under the assumption that tomorrow’s consequences can be endlessly deferred. They cannot.

Believers are called to pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1-2) — including those making the fiscal decisions that will shape the inheritance left to the next generation. Pray that God would raise up leaders with the courage to tell the truth about where this nation is headed. Pray for a spirit of repentance over the culture of spending that has gripped Washington for decades. Pray that the church would rise up as a voice of wisdom and stewardship in a nation drowning in debt. And pray that God, in His mercy, would give America the time and leadership it needs to find its way back to fiscal sanity before the consequences become irreversible.
