The Trump administration has begun deporting Haitian nationals following a Supreme Court decision allowing the administration to end Temporary Protected Status for Haitians. The first flight carried 162 people back to Haiti, including individuals convicted of violent crimes, sexual offenses, drug trafficking, and gang-related activity.

Let the IFA community know how to pray for you.

The deportations represent a significant shift for Haitian nationals who had previously been shielded from removal through TPS. The program allows foreign nationals already in the United States to remain when conditions in their home countries—such as armed conflict or natural disasters—make returning unsafe.

Haiti first received TPS designation following the devastating 2010 earthquake. Although the designation was intended to be temporary, protections were repeatedly extended over the following years as Haiti continued to experience political instability, natural disasters, and widespread gang violence.

The Trump administration moved to terminate the protections, arguing that TPS had effectively become a long-term immigration status rather than the temporary humanitarian measure envisioned by law. The Supreme Court ultimately cleared the way for the administration to proceed with ending the protections.

Following that decision, the administration deported its first group of 162 Haitian nationals. According to the Department of Homeland Security, many of those removed had significant criminal histories.

Among the deportees were individuals affiliated with gangs such as Zoe Pound and 88 Crush Mob. DHS said others had convictions involving sexual battery of children between the ages of 12 and 15, corruption of minors, drug trafficking, child cruelty, burglary, and larceny.

Some of those deported had originally entered the United States illegally, while others entered through humanitarian parole. TPS had nevertheless prevented their removal to Haiti while the protections remained in effect.

“On the latest deportation flight back to Haiti, we deported dangerous criminals including pedophiles, gang members, drug traffickers, and violent assailants,” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said.

“The T in TPS stands for TEMPORARY,” he added.

The administration’s action also highlights a longstanding debate over TPS itself. Federal law created the program as a temporary protection for nationals of countries experiencing extraordinary conditions. But some TPS designations have been repeatedly renewed for years or even decades, leading critics to argue that a temporary program has gradually become a form of de facto permanent residency.

Supporters of TPS counter that returning recipients to countries still facing dangerous conditions can place them at serious risk. Haiti, in particular, has endured severe political turmoil and gang violence in recent years.

For the Trump administration, however, the latest deportations are part of a broader effort to enforce removal orders and narrow humanitarian immigration programs it argues have been stretched beyond their original purpose. DHS has also employed measures such as ankle monitoring to increase compliance among individuals subject to deportation.

For intercessors, this development presents several matters for prayer. We can pray that federal officials would administer immigration law with wisdom, justice, and compassion; that dangerous criminals would be prevented from harming American communities; and that God would bring desperately needed peace and stability to Haiti.

Share your prayers for our immigration officials, our communities, and the people of Haiti in the comments.
