Trump Administration Targets Alleged Asylum Abuse With Historic Visa Revocations

The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to revoke more than 200,000 tourism and business visas held by foreigners who sought asylum after entering the United States as temporary visitors. If carried out, the action would reportedly constitute the largest mass visa revocation in U.S. history.

Post a prayer for your state!

    From The Daily Caller:

The State Department will soon announce the revocation of B1 and B2 visas issued between 2016 and 2026 for individuals who previously were or are currently seeking asylum, according to the AP, which cited government documents. The State Department will reportedly work alongside the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to implement the revocations.

“We are coordinating with DHS to identify and revoke the nonimmigrant visas of foreigners who have come to the United States claiming to be short-term visitors, but then file for asylum to stay here permanently,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott told the AP.

The AP noted that this would be the largest mass visa revocation in U.S. history and would likely face legal challenges.

The reported action focuses on B1 and B2 visas, which allow foreigners to enter the United States temporarily for business or tourism. Unlike immigrant visas, they are not intended to provide a pathway for permanent residence. The administration argues that some foreigners have exploited these temporary visas by entering the country as visitors and subsequently filing asylum claims that can allow them to remain in the U.S. while their cases work through an overwhelmed immigration system.

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau argued Monday that the asylum process has been burdened by frivolous claims that can take years to resolve. During that time, applicants may receive authorization to work and establish lives in the United States, making eventual removal more difficult.

Landau pointed to Colombian national Humberto Coral as an example. According to Landau, Coral entered the United States on a tourist visa in 2015 before filing for asylum shortly before the visa expired. He subsequently received a work permit during the Obama administration and continued renewing it for roughly a decade. Landau criticized Coral for using his years in the United States to advocate for Colombia’s left-wing government and sharply condemn American immigration policies.

The sweeping revocations would fit within a broader Trump administration effort to scrutinize how foreign nationals use America’s visa and immigration systems. The State Department and Department of Homeland Security have increasingly emphasized that temporary permission to enter or remain in the United States does not guarantee a permanent right to stay.

The scale of the planned action also means legal challenges are likely. With more than 200,000 visas reportedly at stake, courts may soon be asked to weigh the administration’s authority to revoke visas based on asylum applications and its broader effort to discourage what officials describe as abuse of the system.

Scripture repeatedly calls for both justice and compassion toward the foreigner. As the administration seeks to distinguish legitimate asylum seekers from those abusing America’s immigration laws, let’s pray for discernment among our leaders and officials. Pray that America’s laws would be enforced justly, that fraud and abuse would be exposed, and that those genuinely fleeing persecution would receive fair consideration.
