A newly released government watchdog report has confirmed what many suspected since the story first broke: FEMA workers deliberately bypassed the homes of storm victims because they displayed support for President Trump, a violation of both federal law and the agency’s own internal policies.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General released its findings Monday, verifying 11 separate documented cases where FEMA employees skipped homes displaying Trump flags during disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Milton in October 2024. In one instance, a FEMA worker left a written note explaining the reason for skipping a home: “did not visit due to Trump flag.” The report confirms this behavior violated the Hatch Act, the federal law that prohibits government employees from allowing political bias to influence how they carry out their official duties, along with FEMA’s own internal guidelines for disaster response.

The scandal first came to light through a whistleblower who exposed internal FEMA messages showing a supervisor had explicitly instructed relief workers to avoid homes with Trump signage. At the time, FEMA characterized the incident as an isolated lapse involving a single team. But Monday’s Inspector General report tells a very different story, one of systemic failure rather than a one-time mistake. Investigators found FEMA’s training programs and oversight mechanisms were inadequate, and that the agency’s own Office of Professional Responsibility initially downplayed the seriousness of what happened. The OIG specifically criticized FEMA leadership for failing to properly supervise workers in the field and for not maintaining adequate documentation of survivor interactions, the very kind of recordkeeping that could have caught this behavior sooner.

The fallout from the original allegations was swift. FEMA supervisor Marn’i Washington and three crew members were fired after being implicated in the discrimination. Washington, however, pushed back publicly at the time, claiming she was being made a scapegoat and insisting the practice of skipping Trump supporters’ homes was far more widespread throughout the agency than officials were willing to admit. Monday’s report, confirming 11 separate cases rather than a single isolated incident, lends real weight to her claim.

President Trump has since referenced this case directly in an executive order addressing political bias within FEMA, using it as evidence that reform is needed to ensure federal disaster response remains politically neutral. A DHS official emphasized this point in response to the report’s release, stating plainly that federal disaster response is supposed to serve every American equally, regardless of who they voted for or what sign is planted in their yard.

This story should trouble every American, regardless of political affiliation, because it exposes a betrayal of one of government’s most basic responsibilities: showing up equally for citizens in their moment of greatest need. Hurricane survivors trust that federal disaster relief will reach them because they are Americans in crisis, not because of their politics. When that trust is broken by those entrusted with serving the public, it corrodes confidence in institutions meant to protect everyone. Scripture calls us to practice justice without partiality and to care for those in need without regard to status or standing (Deuteronomy 16:19, James 2:1-4). Pray for accountability and real reform within FEMA, for the storm survivors who were denied help in their time of crisis, and for leaders overseeing disaster relief to govern with integrity and fairness toward every American they are called to serve.
