A New York Democrat is warning his own party that the policy agenda of the Democratic Socialists of America is a political liability that candidates tied to the group cannot simply wish away, even as the left wing’s influence continues to grow within the party.

Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., who represents parts of Long Island and Queens, weighed in on the growing presence of DSA-aligned candidates in a CBS interview this week, arguing that those seeking office under the party’s banner should be held accountable for the organization’s positions whether or not they choose to talk about them publicly.

“They’ve got to defend the DSA platform,” Suozzi said, arguing the platform is a horrible agenda that would fundamentally reshape American governance.
He attributed a sweeping list of policies to the DSA, including government control of major corporations in food, medicine, and utilities, eliminating the U.S. Senate, and having the House appoint the Supreme Court and select the president.
“I’ve always got to defend the Democratic platform,” he said, drawing a contrast between the scrutiny DSA candidates receive and the accountability he says he himself faces as a mainstream Democrat.
Suozzi’s comments underscore a tension that has grown more pronounced within the Democratic Party in recent years, as DSA-backed candidates have won primaries in districts across the country and pushed the party’s center of gravity leftward.
The congressman’s critique was notable not for what it said about the DSA, but for the fact that he said it at all. Suozzi, a moderate who has been willing to break with the progressive wing on issues ranging from border security to policing, is among a shrinking number of Democrats who openly challenge the direction of the party’s left flank.
He pointed to additional positions he attributes to the DSA, including removing checks and balances, defunding the police and the Department of Defense, abolishing prisons, and supporting open borders. He acknowledged that some DSA candidates may not publicly endorse every part of the platform, but argued that they should still be required to answer for it, just as he says he is required to defend the positions of the mainstream party.
For Christian voters, the exchange is a reminder that politics is ultimately a matter of stewardship and discernment. Scripture warns against being naive about the intentions of leaders who promise sweeping change, while also calling believers to be salt and light in the public square (Matthew 5:13-16). Whether the policy proposals in question come from the left or the right, the responsibility to examine them carefully remains the same.
Let us pray for wisdom and discernment for voters as they evaluate candidates and their platforms, for courage for leaders willing to speak truth even when it is politically uncomfortable, and for Democrats to wake up, join Republicans, and to push back against the DSA.
