California lawmakers are advancing legislation that would recognize two major Muslim holidays as official state holidays, a move that is drawing both praise from supporters and criticism from religious and political conservatives.

Find out when your state prays.

If enacted, Assembly Bill 2017 would add Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to California’s list of official state holidays. Supporters argue the measure would provide greater recognition for Muslim residents, while critics question why similar recognition has not been extended to Christian and Jewish observances.

    From CBN:

Assemblyman Matt Haney rolled out the proposal during Ramadan.”No worker will have to choose between honoring their faith and keeping their job,” he explained. “But recognizing it isn’t just about a date on a calendar. It’s about telling Muslim students, workers, and families across California that their faith, their traditions, and their celebrations matter.”

    …

“The state of California doesn’t honor any other religion. But now suddenly they’re kowtowing and catering to what is effectively Sharia law,” [Rabbi Michael Barclay] said.

    …

“The problem is that Islam has joined the group of the oppressed in that imagination of the radical left, and they don’t care about what Islam claims, what Islam’s intentions are,” [Danny Burmawi, a former Muslim and political analyst,] explained. “They care that Islam is a weapon that could be utilized against the Christians, the white, the male, the power system they are trying to take down.”

The legislation has become part of a broader debate over religion, culture, and politics in California. Supporters contend that recognizing Eid holidays would acknowledge the state’s growing Muslim population and allow students and workers to observe important religious celebrations without conflict. The bill would also permit schools and community colleges to close on those days if they choose.

Critics, however, argue that the proposal raises questions about equal treatment among faith groups. Rabbi Michael Barclay noted that California does not currently recognize major Jewish holy days such as Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur as state holidays, despite the state’s larger Jewish population. He and others have also expressed concern about what they view as an increasing political alliance between progressive activists and Muslim advocacy groups.

The debate comes amid heightened tensions over Israel, Gaza, and antisemitism on college campuses. Across the nation, pro-Palestinian demonstrations have sparked disagreements about free speech, political activism, and the line between criticism of Israel and hostility toward Jewish people. Those concerns have become intertwined with discussions about religious accommodation and cultural influence in public institutions.

This is an opportunity to pray for wisdom among lawmakers and cultural leaders. As America continues to wrestle with questions of religious liberty, public policy, and social cohesion, let’s pray that truth, fairness, and respect for genuine religious freedom would guide the nation’s decisions.
